HSC minimum standard guide

A practical guide to reading, writing and numeracy preparation for the HSC minimum standard.

What the minimum standard tests check

The HSC minimum standard is about functional reading, writing and numeracy skills. Treat it as a skills test, not a memory test. The preparation method is short, frequent practice with feedback.

Reading

Practise finding the main idea, identifying evidence, comparing statements and distinguishing what the text says from what you assume.

Writing

Practise short, clear responses with a beginning, middle and end. Focus on answering the prompt directly, using paragraphs and checking sentence clarity.

Numeracy

Practise percentages, rates, measurement, graphs, tables, estimation and multi-step everyday calculations. Show your working clearly.

7-day prep plan
